A job does not improve your student budget by its full advertised gross wage. What matters is the additional amount remaining after deductions applicable to you and costs caused by the work. That requires details of the actual employment arrangement, not just the hourly rate in an advert.

Turn the offer into an available amount

Clarify hours, pay and the expected payment date. Ask payroll to explain the anticipated payslip. Tax and social insurance depend on the circumstances; being enrolled does not make every job automatically free of deductions. Deutsches Studierendenwerk directs students to their health insurer for individual insurance questions.

Then identify additional travel, necessary equipment and any extra meal costs. Include expenses genuinely created by this job. An already-paid travel pass should not be charged again in full if it covers the route without extra cost. Conversely, a regularly needed supplementary ticket belongs in the calculation.

Compare time including the journey

In a hypothetical example, a job provides €420 of actual take-home pay. Additional travel costs €35 and other necessary expenses cost €15, leaving a €370 improvement in the budget. This is a calculation method, not a general payroll estimate. The take-home amount must come from your own circumstances.

Include unpaid travelling time and the effect on your timetable. A more distant workplace may fit less well even with a higher hourly rate. If it causes you to miss required teaching or extend your studies, the immediate extra pay is not the only relevant figure.

Check interactions with other resources

BAföG, scholarships or other support may have reporting and assessment rules. Ask the responsible organisation using the job type, period and expected earnings. A general statement from a friend cannot replace that check. Avoid using an old income threshold without confirming that it applies to the current procedure.

After the first payslips, compare your forecast with reality. If fewer hours are offered or costs are higher, update the plan. A meaningful assessment shows the job's actual contribution to your finances alongside its time demands. Keep those two figures together when comparing another offer, rather than returning to the advertised wage as the only measure.
