A leave of absence can create room for recovery, caring responsibilities or another necessary interruption. Financially, however, it is not simply an ordinary semester without classes. Formal status can affect support, work and insurance. Map those consequences before relying on payments continuing as before.

What exactly is being interrupted?

Ask the university to confirm the leave period and the rules on studying or taking assessments during it. An informal break is not the same as approved leave. Record how and when you can return to the course. These facts provide a common starting point for conversations with the organisations managing your funding.

The Deutsches Studierendenwerk explains that leave and withdrawal from university affect BAföG, scholarships and other social benefits. Ask each responsible organisation about your particular circumstances. Keeping a student card does not by itself establish continued eligibility.

Four answers for the revised budget

  • Which regular payment stops or pauses, and on what date?
  • What notification or evidence must you provide?
  • Which expense previously covered elsewhere will become your responsibility?
  • What must happen before payments can restart?

Check existing loans separately. Interest may continue even when no further money is disbursed. Do not change direct debits or contractual payments solely because you have applied for leave. Use the arrangement confirmed by the provider, and keep a copy with your funding records.

For everyday spending, separate unavoidable expenses from costs that really disappear. Rent continues while the tenancy remains in place. Savings on commuting might be replaced by journeys for treatment or care. Planned employment belongs in the income column only if it is realistic for your circumstances and the relevant employment and insurance classification has been clarified.

Returning also needs funding

Create a separate line for the restart: semester contributions, travel back to the university, possibly accommodation, and the time before resumed funding reaches your account. A break can be covered month by month yet still leave a gap at the point of return. Keep any restart reserve separate from money available for daily spending.

If confirmed resources are insufficient, take the whole calculation to student social counselling. Support depends on individual circumstances; approved leave does not automatically establish entitlement to a particular benefit. Keep written answers with the university decision and review the first month’s actual payments against your new budget. Follow up promptly when an expected payment has stopped or an old one continues unexpectedly.
