Before graduation, a debt inventory is often more useful than one large total. Two loans with the same outstanding balance can have different interest arrangements, deadlines and amendment options. Obligations not yet due belong in the record too, so they do not unexpectedly appear beside the first student-loan instalment when employment begins.

Collect every obligation

Gather agreements, current statements and notices. Include student loans, education loans, any repayable BAföG portion, private borrowing and other outstanding finance. Keep these separate even when several payments go through the same bank. Having a shared contact does not mean there is only one agreement.

For each item, record the creditor, reference, currency, balance and date of the supporting document. Add the next due date, intended instalment and repayment start. Leave missing information explicitly unresolved. An old payout total is not a dependable substitute for a current balance.

Identify interest recorded separately

Check whether the displayed debt includes all interest accrued to the statement date. Where payments have been deferred, additional amounts may sit outside the usual principal balance. Request a complete breakdown if the relationship is unclear. Settling the loan later may require a separate figure valid for a specified date.

Consider a fictional example. One agreement shows €7,200 of principal and separately €180 of unpaid interest. Another shows €1,100 outstanding. The inventory therefore contains €8,480 of known obligations rather than €8,300. Whether further interest will accrue before payment needs a separate check. The example does not describe any particular contract.

Turn balances into a payment calendar

Arrange the next twelve months by actual due dates. A quarterly payment can be saved for monthly in the household budget, but the full amount remains due on the agreed day. Include planned one-off payments and the end of any grace period. The calendar reveals months in which obligations overlap.

Place the expected start of employment over that calendar. For confirmed arrangements, use the known payday; a hoped-for job start remains a scenario. If the first instalment falls before the first salary, resolve that timing gap separately. A salary that will eventually cover the monthly budget cannot retrospectively fund a debit due today.

Use the record in discussions

Mark variable rates, arrangements approaching their end and uncertain information. Changes involving several creditors need separate confirmation. A discussion about one agreement does not amend the others. KfW provides its student-loan repayment schedule through the credit portal; use the relevant documentation and contact channels for other borrowing.

The inventory does not automatically establish which debt should receive extra payments first. That requires comparing costs, necessary reserves, deadlines and possible contractual consequences. If the combined payments are unaffordable, take the complete list to suitable debt advice. Include small private loans: they still consume money even without a standard statement.

Update the inventory after a significant change and preserve earlier versions separately. You can then trace whether a difference came from interest, a new payout, a payment or a correction. The objective is an auditable record that supports decisions rather than a total that simply feels reassuring or alarming. It also gives an adviser the information needed to distinguish an immediate cash shortage from a longer-term repayment problem.
