Funding university while raising a child rarely comes through a single payment. Your own living costs, the child’s needs, childcare and academic expenses can involve different organisations and calculation rules. Combining everything into one monthly total can conceal that a payment was awarded only for a particular person or period.
The Deutsches Studierendenwerk and the federal Familienportal describe several possible forms of support for student parents. Which apply, and how they interact, depends on the household’s circumstances. The sorting exercise below prepares you for advice; it does not calculate entitlement.
Build a household budget that identifies people
Begin with shared expenses such as housing and energy. Add the adults’ personal spending and the child’s expenses. Keep childcare, food, clothing and necessary travel visible as separate items. Allocate shared costs in a clear way for your own planning without trying to reproduce an official benefits assessment.
Alongside expenses, list each income source with its recipient, purpose, start and end dates. Money intended for a child is not automatically unrestricted funding for tuition. Support from a partner or relative also needs an agreed amount and timing if it is being used to cover fixed bills.
Where adults live in separate households, show the payments actually agreed and received. Irregular or missing transfers should not silently appear as guaranteed income. Record the problem factually for the adviser rather than immediately covering the entire gap through student borrowing.
A responsibility list reduces repeated work
- The responsible BAföG office is a starting point for questions about your own educational support.
- Student social counselling can help map possible benefits and their interaction.
- The university’s family office can explain study arrangements and available childcare services.
- Individual family benefits have their own responsible organisations and application routes, which can be researched through the Familienportal.
Ask more than the name of a benefit. Establish who submits the application, which household members are considered, what income evidence is needed and when changes must be reported. If one office directs you elsewhere, record the exact unresolved question. This avoids reconstructing the entire history at every appointment.
Keep a short status entry for each application: submitted, evidence missing, query outstanding, decision received or payment expected. Submission does not make the money available. When sending additional documents, retain evidence of delivery and keep the deadline in your calendar.
Childcare changes time and money together
Compare a teaching day, a working day and a day without childcare. The childcare fee alone does not explain how much time becomes available for learning or paid work. Travel, closures and a settling-in period may change the arrangement. Identify a response to specific interruptions without treating an arbitrary extra loan as the solution to every possible difficulty.
In an invented example, additional childcare costs €110 a month and permits confirmed earnings of €240. Before any other effects, the difference is €130. This calculation does not establish whether benefits change because of the earnings. Only after checking those interactions can you identify the amount actually available.
Leave of absence, part-time enrolment or a change in work may require each organisation to reassess the situation. An arrangement permitted by the university is not necessarily financially neutral. Ask when a change takes effect and what evidence will be needed if you return to the previous study pattern.
International students may also face residence-related questions. Use an appropriate advice service before drawing conclusions about personal eligibility or consequences from general information. Keep private documents secure and send them only to the responsible organisation. The purpose of the budget is to coordinate support and identify the remaining gap, not to add different benefits together without checking the rules.
