The purchase price is the most visible bicycle cost. A student budget also needs the things that make regular use possible: a suitable lock, required equipment, maintenance and potential repairs. Compare the total need over the intended period of use rather than just two sale listings.
Describe the intended use
How far is campus, where can the bicycle be parked and what must it carry? Short urban trips create different requirements from longer daily journeys. Consider whether you can maintain it yourself or will regularly need a workshop. The cheapest purchase is not automatically the cheapest usable option.
A used bicycle benefits from a knowledgeable condition check. Visible wear and necessary repairs belong in the calculation before purchase. A low price helps little if several parts immediately need replacement. Get assistance where technical condition is uncertain instead of inferring roadworthiness from an advertisement.
Separate initial and continuing costs
In an invented example, a €180 bicycle needs a €35 lock and €45 of necessary repairs. The starting amount is €260, excluding later maintenance. These are not recommended prices; they illustrate items easily omitted from comparisons.
Alongside the purchase, plan a modest, reasoned reserve for foreseeable wear. Its size depends on condition, use and your own repair capabilities. Do not budget a whole new bicycle every month, but do not treat maintenance as impossible either. Records of previous repairs can improve the estimate.
Keep an alternative in the plan
Illness, weather or a repair may require another way to travel. Check which alternative is already available and what would cost extra. An already paid semester ticket differs financially from buying a new fare. A university bicycle-sharing or loan option may also be worth checking where it actually exists.
After a semester, compare the plan with real spending. Add the purchase, necessary accessories and repairs, then consider how often the bicycle was used. This grounds the decision in your own routine rather than assuming cycling has no costs after purchase.
