During a move, two rental periods can overlap. This is a separate funding gap and should not disappear between transport costs and the new monthly rent. Planning by dates and due payments reveals the real burden and any expected relief that remains uncertain.

Put both agreements side by side

Record the confirmed end of the existing agreement and the start of the new one. Add payment dates, not just months of occupation. Moving out does not automatically end a contractual payment obligation. Finding a possible replacement tenant also does not establish that early release has been agreed. Check the actual position and obtain appropriate advice where legal details are unclear.

Only then calculate the overlap. In an invented example, one month includes €390 old rent and €460 new rent. Housing payments total €850 that month, before possible moving and setup costs. These are not recommended rents. They show why the new monthly amount alone does not describe the transition.

Treat expected refunds cautiously

The return of an earlier deposit may help, but it may not arrive when needed. Do not treat it as a dependable receipt while amount and timing remain unresolved. An agreed contribution from housemates also needs a payment date if it will cover a bill coming due.

Create a cautious version excluding those uncertain receipts. How large would the shortfall be? Which expenses can actually wait, and which cannot? This supports a discussion about help or payment arrangements using a defined amount. A general increase in ongoing borrowing could otherwise extend the financing of a one-off transition unnecessarily.

Count alternatives after confirmation

Where early termination or another arrangement might be possible, ask about the process in good time. Include the saving only once an agreement is confirmed. Subletting or handing a room to someone else should not be treated as a secure solution without checking permission and conditions. Practical feasibility and legal permission are separate questions.

Finish with a transition plan covering both rents, the deposit, transport and available funds. After moving, remove the expired rent from the recurring budget while continuing to monitor outstanding statements. The overlap then remains visible as a limited event rather than becoming the basis of an unnecessarily high ongoing funding estimate.
