The statement that studying in Germany is tuition-free is too broad for a specific funding decision. Tuition, the semester contribution and additional programme charges are different items. Which ones apply depends on the institution, course and personal circumstances, among other factors. Check the information for the actual place you intend to accept.

Find the relevant fee information

Start with the institution's official website and the selected programme. Look for its fee regulations, current semester contribution and information for international applicants. A general overview can provide orientation but does not replace the institution's authoritative details. Bachelor's degrees, consecutive master's programmes and continuing education can also have different costs.

DAAD describes exceptions to the widespread absence of tuition and distinguishes different types of expense. Do not transfer a blanket statement from another federal state. If nationality, residence status or previous education affects the classification, ask the responsible office with those specific details.

Count reductions only when established

A possible exemption or reduction is initially an unresolved option. Check the conditions, evidence and deadline, including whether a separate application is necessary. Keep the full known amount in the basic budget until a decision or clearly applicable binding rule establishes otherwise. This avoids discovering a substantial gap after accepting the place because an assumed reduction was refused.

Also distinguish a fee waiver from funding. A scholarship may support living costs without covering tuition. Conversely, waived tuition does not supply money for rent. Allocate each confirmation to the expense it actually covers rather than treating all support as interchangeable cash.

Calculate the intended full duration

Multiply recurring fees by the planned number of semesters and add one-off charges separately. Include an extra semester as a distinct scenario. Check whether later semesters are already governed by a fixed arrangement or whether adjustments are possible. The first invoice alone does not describe the total financial commitment.

Record when payment must have arrived for enrolment or re-registration. If funds are transferred internationally, allow for processing and possible deductions. Preserve fee notices and payment evidence. Only when the amount, deadline, any reduction and the funding source line up can you judge whether the place is affordable over the planned period. If a figure remains uncertain, label it as unresolved and obtain clarification before replacing it with a convenient estimate.
