A BAföG loan and a student bank loan may finance the same period of life but follow different repayment systems. Combining them into one line can hide different contacts, due dates and relief options. Create a separate record for each obligation and combine them only afterwards in the household budget.

Identify the type of loan first

Find the original funding decisions and subsequent repayment documents. Distinguish the public BAföG loan from a bank loan or separately contracted student credit. The precise legal basis and notice matter more than an informal label such as student funding. Special loan types and older arrangements can follow different rules.

For the ordinary public BAföG loan, repayment begins according to statutory provisions and the end of the relevant maximum funding period, rather than simply the day of graduation. The Federal Office of Administration establishes the relevant information in its notice. Check it instead of adding a standard interval to your own graduation date. The legislation contains particular rules for multiple stages of education.

Place the notice beside the bank schedule

For BAföG, record the case reference, established debt, repayment start, payment frequency and contact route. Beside it, record the bank loan's agreement number, principal, interest, instalment and due date. An application to the Federal Office of Administration does not alter the bank agreement. Likewise, a confirmed bank amendment does not replace an application within the BAföG process.

When a new notice arrives, check more than the prominent total. Read the procedural information and instructions about possible remedies. If details are unclear or appear wrong, seek suitable assistance promptly and observe the stated deadlines. Finding an old bank statement later is of limited help if a necessary response was missed earlier.

Use one calendar with separate payments

An invented example demonstrates the planning. A bank loan requires €180 each month. A separate repayment schedule calls for €300 every three months. Save €100 monthly towards that second payment. The average monthly burden is €280, but €480 actually leaves the account in the month when both payments fall due.

The €300 is only an illustrative figure, not a current standard BAföG instalment. The point is the distinction between monthly saving and actual payment frequency. Take your amounts from the valid notice. Keep payment references and recipient details separate so money is not inadvertently allocated to the wrong obligation.

To check the example, place three months side by side. In the first two, €180 goes to the bank and €100 is reserved. In the third, the €180 bank instalment and €300 from that accumulated reserve are paid. Saving the reserve is not another expense in addition to the later payment; it prepares for it. If the money is spent elsewhere meanwhile, the average calculation still looks correct but cash is missing on the due date. Check both the balance and its assigned purpose before each larger collection.

Check income-related relief separately

The legislation provides for income-related release from repayment obligations on application for the public BAföG loan. The conditions and evidence must be examined for the individual procedure. A lower salary alone does not automatically amend the existing notice. Ask the Federal Office of Administration what information your circumstances require and retain evidence of the application.

At the same time, establish which adjustments are available for the bank loan. Even confirmed BAföG relief does not mean the bank payment pauses. Conversely, relief at the bank should not be treated as spare spending money if other obligations remain unfunded. Update the combined plan after every decision using the amounts that actually apply.

Assess early settlement on its own terms

Any offer for early BAföG repayment must be assessed using the personal documents. Compare the specific settlement amount with ordinary payments and the reserve available to you. If settlement requires a new interest-bearing loan, include all of its costs and conditions. A visible discount does not establish that taking on new debt creates an overall saving.

Keep payment evidence and decisions with the corresponding record. Check address and contact details even during years when no instalment is due. When both repayments eventually run together, this separation keeps amendments, enquiries and closure confirmations attached to the correct obligation. It also allows an adviser to see which options belong to which system rather than assuming that one solution can be applied to every education-related debt.
