Parental leave can change income, expenses and payment dates at the same time. An existing student-loan instalment does not automatically change with them. Prepare a revised household budget before income shifts and establish separately which adjustments are available for each loan.
Make individual months visible
Record the last regular salary, confirmed benefits, possible part-time earnings and planned return to work over their actual periods. An annual average can hide months with considerably less money. Mark applications awaiting a decision as pending and prepare an alternative calculation.
Add known purchases and new recurring costs. Also check whether previous spending temporarily decreases, such as some commuting. Count those savings only when they genuinely occur. A retained travel pass or continuing contract remains an expense even when used less frequently.
Share the budget without confusing agreements
If costs are shared within a household, discuss the division for each affected period. Establish who covers rent, ordinary essentials and loan payments, and which money forms a shared reserve. A new household arrangement does not automatically change legal responsibility under a loan agreement. The person servicing it still needs a dependable payment method.
In a hypothetical example, €260 remains monthly after necessary household spending. A bank instalment of €170 leaves €90. If irregular expenses require another €60 a month on average, only €30 of room remains. Looking at the instalment alone would have made the position appear much more comfortable. These numbers are only a calculation example.
Request relief through the relevant process
Ask the lender early about contractual payment changes or another temporary arrangement. Have the start, duration, interest consequences and later instalment explained. A possibility discussed verbally is not approved relief for the payment calendar. Prepare required income evidence and observe the relevant application timing.
For a public BAföG loan, income-related release from repayment must be assessed separately under statutory conditions. Family circumstances can be relevant. Parental leave alone does not establish an automatic entitlement, and a BAföG decision does not amend a separate bank instalment. Submit the necessary information to the organisation responsible for each obligation.
Include the return to employment
Childcare, commuting and initially unsettled routines can create new costs when leave ends. Do not immediately treat every additional salary payment as available for extra debt repayment. Compare the new income with the new spending and check when any temporarily reduced loan instalment rises again.
Set a reminder before that date and update the figures once childcare and working hours are established. If the return differs from the original plan, contact the lender again in time. A month-by-month budget makes earlier assumptions visible, allowing them to be corrected before temporary relief expires. Keep confirmation of each agreed change so the household's internal arrangement and the creditor's actual schedule remain consistent.
