Travel to university is a recurring expense even when individual journeys look inexpensive. A useful transport plan begins with the routes actually needed: classes, the library, a placement and a job may be in different locations. Only then can you choose a suitable ticket or combination.

Map a typical week

Record the start, destination and time of regular journeys. Include evening activities and days involving several sites. A ticket suitable for the main campus may not cover every other route. Check geographical and time restrictions using current information from the operator or university.

If a ticket is included in the semester contribution, account for its usefulness without recording the contribution a second time as a new expense. Journeys beyond the included area remain separate costs. Do not rely on arrangements from an earlier semester or another university where the actual offer differs.

Compare single journeys with fixed costs

Use a realistic number of travel days rather than every calendar day. In an invented example, eight additional journeys at €3 each cost €24. A separate €35 monthly product would not be cheaper for those journeys alone. More trips or other included benefits could change the result. The figures are only an illustration.

Include irregular travel, such as examinations at another site or trips outside teaching weeks. A month without classes is not necessarily a month without transport costs. Also check whether a contract continues while being used less and what changes are actually possible.

The inexpensive route must work

Compare journey times with your timetable. A connection that regularly makes you late for work can threaten income. Combining cycling and public transport might avoid extra tickets where the route and season allow. Plan a realistic alternative for days when that combination is unavailable.

After the first weeks, compare actual journeys and spending with the plan. Recalculate when classes or the workplace change. Transport costs are not a permanent flat allowance; they arise from your particular week and the offers currently available.
