A promising title in the DAAD scholarship database is only the beginning of the assessment. The individual programme call determines who can apply, which activities are funded and which documents must arrive by which deadline. Read those details before spending substantial time drafting an application.
Check the eligibility questions first
Review the target group, country or residence requirements, intended qualification, subject area and funding period. An opportunity for graduates does not automatically suit a complete bachelor's degree. Likewise, a research visit can have different conditions from funding for a taught course. Save the particular call with its programme name and date so you can identify the version used.
If a criterion is unclear, send a short, specific question to the listed contact. Describe the relevant circumstances and refer briefly to the point causing uncertainty. A general request for any scholarship in Germany is harder to answer than a precise question about a selected programme.
Separate the components of support
Distinguish regular payments, possible one-off benefits and costs that are not covered. Check the start and end of funding and any conditions for extension. An award for a particular period does not mean a longer course is funded in full. The word scholarship does not automatically mean that every tuition charge is included either.
Transfer only confirmed components to your funding plan. If an additional benefit requires a separate application, mark it as pending. Budget separately for costs before the funding period. Arriving early may be sensible but can create expenses outside the approved dates. Also identify documents that must be submitted before payments begin, rather than assuming approval and payment happen on the same day.
Arrange the application in the right order
List evidence that depends on other people: references, translations, admission documents or language tests. Work backwards from the deadline and give those tasks time first. Check whether admission and scholarship applications are separate procedures and when each piece of evidence is required. A university confirmation is not necessarily a funding decision.
Before submission, check file formats, readability, completeness and whether transmission actually succeeded. Save the acknowledgement. While waiting for a decision, keep the award as an unconfirmed possibility in the budget. A workable alternative should identify which steps would be delayed or cancelled after a rejection. Replacing the same amount immediately with an unspecified loan does not resolve the question of affordability; it changes the source of money and adds future repayment obligations that need their own assessment.
