Before filling a student budget gap with a loan, check whether BAföG could be part of the funding plan. Your own assumption that you would be rejected is not an official decision. Equally, an online estimate is not an award. Looking only at one parental income figure may miss other relevant circumstances.

Present the whole situation

For an initial discussion, prepare your university, course, previous education and intended starting date. Add the personal and financial information requested by the official procedure. The application and responsible office explain which evidence is needed. Another student's experience cannot determine your result, even if you attend a similar course.

Applying and obtaining advice from the BAföG office are free. Deutsches Studierendenwerk directs applicants to the official BAföG Digital portal and warns against expecting paid application services to receive preferential processing. Clear information and suitable evidence make an application easier to assess; paying an intermediary does not buy an official priority.

Maintain two versions of the budget

While a decision is pending, keep a cautious plan based on confirmed funds and a second version showing possible support. Mark that support as unconfirmed. This lets you prepare without spending money that has not been awarded.

Imagine a hypothetical monthly shortfall of €250. A later award could reduce the need to borrow. It would not automatically end a loan already signed, however. Existing loan agreements have their own conditions. Before using borrowing as a bridge, check how payments, changes and repayment work rather than assuming that future support will cancel the commitment.

Timing matters

Do not postpone contacting the office merely because one document is missing. Ask how to submit the application in time and provide outstanding evidence afterwards. BAföG generally cannot start earlier than the application month or before education begins; confirm the submission procedure and your particular circumstances with the responsible office.

Once a decision arrives, compare the award, covered period and payment dates with your expenses. Read which changes must be reported. Approval is an input to the budget, not a substitute for it. Only after aligning the support with actual costs can you judge whether any supplementary loan remains necessary and, if so, for which months.
