A BAföG decision contains more than a monthly payment figure. It links an award period, calculation assumptions and information about your continuing responsibilities. Read it even when the amount roughly matches your expectations. A plausible final figure does not prove that every underlying detail is correct.
Compare it with your records
Start with your name, university, stage of education and award period. Then compare the information used in the decision with your application. Depending on the case, this may include accommodation, income, assets or relevant information about other people. The period relevant to the assessment matters; a current bank figure is not automatically the correct comparison.
Mark anything you do not understand before deciding it is wrong. Calculation terms may have meanings different from everyday language. A simple personal monthly calculation therefore does not necessarily disprove the official result. For a useful question, identify the page, particular item and evidence you are referring to.
Distinguish the award from the transfer
Check which months are covered and whether the decision includes a back payment. A larger first transfer may cover several months rather than establish a higher continuing monthly award. Allocate such payments to their intended periods before planning additional spending.
In a hypothetical example, the first transfer covers three approved months. Treating it entirely as income for the month it arrives makes that month look unusually well funded. Some of the money may actually need to cover expenses already incurred. Matching the payment to its period prevents funds for earlier obligations from being spent a second time.
Resolve discrepancies precisely
If you suspect an incorrect detail, explain what the decision says and which information you believe differs. Ask the responsible office for an explanation or correction. At the same time, read the information about formal remedies and observe the stated procedure and deadlines. Do not assume an informal enquiry replaces any formal action that may be necessary.
File the decision with the relevant evidence and note the end of the award period. Read the instructions about changes you must report. Used this way, the decision becomes a working document for managing student finance rather than merely confirmation that a payment arrived. Seek qualified assistance when an important point remains unresolved.
