The end of a BAföG award period is a separate date and does not necessarily coincide with the end of a semester. Use the date in your current decision when planning the renewal application. A calendar containing only teaching and examination dates can easily miss this second timetable.

Mark the final approved month, then allow time beforehand for the application, documents and possible questions. Deutsches Studierendenwerk recommends submitting a renewal application at least two months before the award period ends. Treat that as a planning recommendation, not a promise that every application will be processed within precisely two months.

Do not simply copy the previous application

Check which details remain accurate. Housing, bank details, income and study progress may have changed. Use the current forms or appropriate route in the official portal. A simplified renewal form is useful only when its conditions fit your case; ask the office if you are uncertain.

Collect updated evidence for the period actually requested. An old certificate may still be readable but no longer relevant. Record when you request information from other people so there is time to resolve missing documents before the award period expires.

Plan for possible payment timing differences

Even an application submitted in good time is not the same as an approved payment. Identify the bills due immediately after the existing period. If you anticipate a gap, contact the office or student social advice service early with the details of your situation. An uncertain processing date alone is not a reason to rush into a long borrowing commitment.

A hypothetical calendar could contain three reminders: review evidence, submit the application, and check receipt or unresolved questions. These are more useful than one alert on the final day. Give each reminder a clear intended outcome rather than simply writing “BAföG” repeatedly.

When the new decision arrives, replace your budget assumptions with the confirmed information and record the next award period. Keep both decisions so any changes remain traceable. Completing this small closing step helps prevent the following renewal from becoming an unexpected emergency in the middle of examinations. It also leaves a clear record if someone helps you organise the next application.
